Though his conceptual practice often draws on an archive of found images and art historical references, Scheibitz explores the boundaries of universality and invention, creating works that are defined by their visual ambiguity. Informed by the codes and systems that structure both the world and our understanding of it, the artist presents multi-layered pieces that combine painterly tradition with digital culture and offer a complex and vibrant visual index of our time.

Thomas Scheibitz has developed a distinct and singular visual language at constant play between figuration and abstraction, placing him at the forefront of contemporary painting and sculpture for over two decades.

Perfectly encapsulating the artist’s tendency toward abstract forms that nonetheless take on figural characteristics and a consequent sense of motion; in Donald (2017), a pink cuboid form supported by thin black lines, which stretch out to each corner of the large painting, suggests a figure striding through a flat orange plane.

The face in profile of Joker II is outlined in black and anchored around a central circle that could be an iris, turntable or digital interface. With the head’s facial features reduced to a series of disparate yet recognizable forms, the work’s title creates allusions towards a deck of cards or the superhero villain. Here, Scheibitz exhibits his brushwork that effortlessly combines hard-edge rigor with felt-tip-pen graphics and broad monochromatism.

Labyrinth (2022) and Luna Park III (2021) present two works that are markedly cool in tone. In Labyrinth, an apparently complex architecture with twists and turns is depicted, its gray walls covered in red hatch marks. Mazes, in classical iconography, represent a state of confusion and disorientation. Alongside the picture's title, a playful space between visual and linguistic information is opened, raising questions about the signs and signals we use to convey or comprehend messages.

The presented selection of works showcases stunning examples of Scheibitz’s combining of painterly strategies and pictorial languages. Consequently, the viewer is confronted with fundamental concerns linked to the practice of painting. Throughout his oeuvre, Scheibitz makes tangible the certainty that things are never one-sided; that the world, or the image one makes of the world, remains unpredictable and therefore always unique.
