Martine Syms - Dominica Publishing, a temporary boutique - Berlin

Martine Syms is one of the defining voices of her generation. She is an artist and director whose practice spans cinema, art and theatre. Presented in the Window, the gallery’s street-facing exhibition space, Dominica Publishing brings together artwork, editions—including new designs, and a selection of publications by the artist.

Dominica Publishing began as an imprint dedicated to exploring Blackness “as a topic, reference, marker, and audience in visual culture”, which remains central to her ongoing inquiry.

The idea of the shop, desire as performance, and the performance of desire have long occupied Syms’ practice. This thread traces back to Golden Age, a Chicago bookshop and project space she ran for five years, platforming international artists, including Jon Rafman’s first solo exhibition.

Often drawing from her own archive of images, objects, and ephemera, Syms transforms the material of everyday life into a visual field rich with personal iconography, poeticism and play. Her subjects flow across media—publishing, moving image, photography, drawing, sculpture—dissolving the lines between them.
