George Condo’s forthcoming two-part exhibition – opening at Sprüth Magers and Hauser & Wirth in New York City – exclusively offers a glimpse into the artist’s creative process and limitless inventive drive in the medium of pastel on paper. Both galleries will present new works in which Condo pushes the limits of improvisation – spontaneously employing gesso, fields of color, and gestural pastel without any preparatory sketches – to delve deep into the challenges of expressing various states of the human psyche. Condo relies upon abstraction to reflect the fragmented, elusive nature of thought and feeling.

Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are proud to present a landmark exhibition at the London gallery in honour of Joseph Kosuth’s eightieth birthday. Spanning from his pioneering works of the 1960s to his most recent pieces, the show traces a profound continuity within Kosuth’s oeuvre, revealing a lifelong exploration of the fundamental questions of art. This exhibition highlights Kosuth’s enduring impact on contemporary thought, probing the intersections of perception, memory, and meaning. His works transcend mere artistic practice, creating spaces for critical engagement in a world increasingly numbed by oversimplification. Here, visitors are invited to reconsider the complex interplay between art, language, and society – a timely reflection on the misinformation and visual theatricality of our age.

Lucy Dodd’s new paintings mobilise material, colour and shape to explore both personal and universal roots and ruptures. The two-part exhibition In Between Worlds reflects Dodd’s recent move from upstate New York to the Scottish countryside. It features paintings and found sculpture that examine the mythological and historical ties between the two places. Using unconventional pigments derived from nature and her immediate surroundings, Dodd traces the passage of time and an energetic shift that is echoed in the colours and spirit of the frenetic, at times large-scale, landscapes composed of painted spills, drops and stains. Working outdoors during the American autumn and later in the Scottish spring, the artist produced two cathartic groups of works that are a true display of place, time and setting. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present the latter part of the cycle of works at the Berlin gallery. The solo show follows its counterpart, The End, staged at The Ranch, Montauk, from November 9 to December 20, 2024.

Andreas Gursky stands out as one of the most important photographers of his generation. His monumentally scaled works have redefined the medium in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, capturing the condition of modern-day life in condensed form. Interested in the workings of globalization, consumerism, and social phenomena as they relate to contemporary society, Gursky examines the realities of our changing planet. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present a solo show of Gursky’s new and recent works as well as a selection of his well-known photographs set in an intertextual dialogue with Old Masters at the New York gallery. Engaging with the images inscribed into our collective memories by the history of painting – from Pieter Bruegel the Elder to J.M.W. Turner and Carl Gustav Carus – the show examines how contemporary images relate to ones of the past, prompting viewers to consider their function as a silent foundation of the way we see.
