Embedded in Schulze’s unique visual language, the sculptures, fabricated in Murano, repeat two frequent motifs in the artist’s work, in which he combines an everyday object with a seemingly banal, curvilinear shape to produce something surprisingly harmonious. The relaxed posture of these reclining, sausage-like forms reflects both the title of this new body of work and the exhibition’s theme. The Relax works’ simplicity, moreover, and their unique combination of rough and smooth textures, and dark and light colors, underscore Schulze’s interest in closely examining daily life through idiosyncratic forms that evoke discomfort in the viewer—but also allure.
The new glass sculptures are surrounded by a selection of paintings from Schulze’s well-known Vacanze series. Both bodies of work—Relax and Vacanze—combine Schulze’s juxtaposed themes, forms and textures to create a tension between the seemingly familiar and the uncannily bizarre.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Sprüth Magers & DH Office and takes place at San Marco 3208, Salizziana Malipiero in Venice.
