Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present A well of night, a solo exhibition of new and reimagined works by Thea Djordjadze. Known for sculptural environments that are continually reworked in response to the spaces they inhabit, Djordjadze draws on the logic of architectural space, the formal legacy of modernist design, and the cultural memory of her Georgian roots to produce works that resist easy categorization. For her first exhibition at the gallery’s New York location, Djordjadze brings existing and new works into dialogue with the neo-Renaissance building, transforming it by covering the dark hardwood floors with light-colored vinyl to dissolve familiar spatial boundaries. Recurring elements such as vitrines appear alongside new paintings from her ongoing series of plaster-filled wooden frames in which pigment is worked into the surface and built up in layers, fusing painterly gesture with sculptural presence.
